Understanding Disability

What is Intellectual Disability?

Intellectual disability is characterised by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and in adaptive behaviour, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 18.

The terminology has evolved globally over the decades to reflect greater societal understanding and dignity — today the internationally recognised and correct term is Intellectual Disability.

In Ch. Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), an alarming 2% of the population of 16,87,000 lives with intellectual disability. Yet the number of institutions working for them remains negligible. Navjeevan Society has been addressing this gap since 1985.

Our Story
Key Facts

Understanding the condition.

Raising awareness helps build an inclusive society where every person can live with dignity.

Definition

Significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour originating before age 18. Affects learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and day-to-day social skills.

Prevalence

2% of Aurangabad's population — approximately 33,740 people — live with intellectual disability. The gap between need and available support remains vast.

Early Signs

Delayed milestones in speech, motor skills, and social interaction. Early identification enables timely intervention and significantly better developmental outcomes.

Education & Training

With specialised education, vocational training and structured support, individuals with intellectual disability can achieve meaningful independence and contribute to society.

Social Inclusion

Community awareness, family counselling, and inclusive environments enable persons with intellectual disability to live with dignity and participate fully in society.

Intervention

Why early intervention matters.

Timing of intervention is critical — a child in the right programme at the right age develops far more effectively.

  • To enhance the child's normal development and enable the use of residual potentials to the maximum extent.
  • To help the child develop to his/her fullest potential and create a strong base for training at later stages.
  • To provide support and assistance to the family — timing of intervention is particularly important when a child runs the risk of missing a critical learning window.
  • Holistic development — physical, cognitive, communication and social domains — is more achievable when begun early.
