Intervention

Early Intervention Services

Effective ways to address the needs of infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities.

Interventions offered at Navjeevan Early Intervention Center:

  • Classroom Programs with parents for 3–6 yrs.

Why intervene early?

  • To enhance the child's normal development.
  • To help the child develop to his/her fullest potential.
  • Creating a strong base for training at later stages.
  • To provide support and assistance to the family — timing of intervention is particularly important when a child runs the risk of missing an opportunity to learn during a state of maximum readiness.

Our aim — achieving holistic development of the child:

  • Physical Development — including fine and gross motor function.
  • Cognitive Development.
  • Communication Development.
  • Social-Emotional Development or Adaptive Development.

Therapies used to achieve this goal:

  • Speech Therapy · Occupational Therapy · Physiotherapy · Music Therapy · Special Education · Mental Health Program
School

The Special School

  • We do not have the regular classes like STD 1 / STD 10. Children are grouped on the basis of their IQ and functional level. They are trained in daily living skills and survival skills, which are more important for these children than academic skills.
  • Training starts right from toilet training to identifying one's own bag, eating, grooming, socialising with classmates, identifying them by their names, developing work behaviour by learning to sit in one place, executing commands, concentrating on the task at hand.
  • We follow the DISHA curriculum which is made mandatory by the Disability Commissioner office, Pune.
  • As they progress, they start with pre-vocational training and after the age of 18 are transferred to the Vocational Training Centre.
  • Children who show academic aptitude are trained and encouraged to take exams up to 4th std. of Open University.

While being trained in daily living skills, children are also exposed to drawing, craft, music, dance and various sports — these activities act as multi-sensory stimulators.

Rehabilitation

Process of Rehabilitation

When we talk of rehabilitation, we don't mean only economic rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is a much broader term — it includes medical rehabilitation, social rehabilitation and vocational & economic rehabilitation.

When a child first comes to Navjeevan, the Clinical Psychologist and special educators assess him. His IQ is determined through clinical tests and he is assessed using various checklists. His case history is taken and if he is diagnosed to be intellectually disabled, he is admitted in the Early Intervention Centre, School, or Vocational Training Centre (VTC) depending on his age.

The teachers evaluate the child's level on the basis of different checklists and prepare his Individual Educational Plan (IEP) in consultation with the parents. The IEP is prepared on the basis of priorities — which skills need to be developed first or which problem needs to be tackled first. Goals are set and the child is evaluated periodically.

Medical Intervention, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are also provided where needed. After the Vocational Training, adults are shifted to the Sheltered Workshop.

Workshop

Sheltered Workshop

Navjeevan Vocational Training Center (since 1997) — to give adults enough work experience before getting job placement outside.

Paper Unit

Files, paper bags etc.

Candle Unit

Handmade candles crafted by our trainees — supported by Dr. Hedgewar Hospital.

Home Science Unit

Papad, chips, chutney, chocolate, cakes & cookies — the girls also cook lunch for themselves daily.

Tailoring Unit

Aprons, bed sheets, pillow covers, nappies, dusters, roti base, kitchen aprons, gifting bags.

Handicraft Unit

Diwali diyas and other handcrafted items.

Drawing & Craft

Creative expression and handmade art for exhibitions.

Care

Care Group

  • The severely retarded adults are separated from the trainable ones. When a separate class of the same level of students is made, the goals set for them are similar. The teacher is able to take activities relevant to them and concentrate better. These adults can thus be taught activities or kept engaged as per their capacity and benefit from the training.
  • Taking care of such adults for six hours also provides great relief to their aging parents.
Therapies

Different types of therapies

Physiotherapy

A fully equipped Physiotherapy Center providing the necessary therapies to all in Navjeevan and outsiders too.

Music Therapy

An hour of singing different songs with actions, every day, has shown miraculous results — encouraging staff to use music therapy for teaching simple concepts.

Speech Therapy

One-to-one therapy in a structured classroom for children who have speech problems, fluency issues like stammering, or difficulty expressing through language.

Clinical Psychological Department

IQ testing, parent counselling and behaviour therapy — addressing patterns of learning and behaviour at every age.

Programs

Other Programs

Manpower Development
