We do not have the regular classes like STD 1 / STD 10. Children are grouped on the basis of their IQ and functional level. They are trained in daily living skills and survival skills, which are more important for these children than academic skills.
Training starts right from toilet training to identifying one's own bag, eating, grooming, socialising with classmates — developing work behaviour by learning to sit in one place, executing commands, and concentrating on the task at hand.
Children who show academic aptitude are trained and encouraged to take exams up to 4th std. of Open University.
We follow the DISHA curriculum made mandatory by the Disability Commissioner office, Pune — a structured framework for special education.
Each child's IEP is prepared in consultation with parents — goals are set based on which skills need to be developed first.
As children progress, they start pre-vocational training and after the age of 18 are transferred to the Vocational Training Centre.
Children are exposed to drawing, craft, music, dance and various sports — these activities act as multi-sensory stimulators for holistic growth.
When a child first comes to Navjeevan, the Clinical Psychologist and special educators assess them. IQ is determined through clinical tests and assessed using various checklists. If diagnosed as intellectually disabled, the child is admitted to the School, Early Intervention Centre, or Vocational Training Centre depending on age.
The teachers evaluate the child's level on the basis of different checklists and prepare an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) in consultation with the parents. Goals are set and the child is evaluated periodically.
Medical intervention, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are also provided where needed.
Sponsor teaching aids, stationery, or financially adopt a child in School for 1 year.
